I made this quiz for the students to take after giving them an overview of the modernist art movements up to about 1946. As such, the quiz is focused on recognizing the differences between different styles.
I used two different kinds of questions. In most of the questions, I show a painting, and give the students four different ‘isms that painting might belong to. I tried to make it so that one is obviously wrong if you know anything about the different styles, while one might trick you unless you think carefully.
The other kind of question is the one where I ask which of four paintings belongs to a certain art school. This proved a bit trickier, because I had to show enough of the paintings in the answers for the students to be able to make an informed decision, while making sure it’s large enough to be seen. Of course for some, the opposite was the case – in the question about pointillism, I had to make sure to zoom in enough for them to see the points!
One thing I noticed is that the images seem larger when you take the quiz than when you made it. This is probably for the best – means I won’t accidentally make an image too small to see!
