This quiz was made for a music class, and is all about teaching the kids to know different instruments from each other. Knowing a saxophone from an oboe, for instance, and being able to tell whether something is a violin or a cello. I also included some more fringe or obscure instruments, like the Theremin and the digeridoo.
Making the quiz, I primarily used freesound.org for instrument sounds. There’s a lot of stuff of varying quality on there, so sometimes I had to look around a bit. For pictures, Google and Wikipedia are your friends.
It would have been easy for me to make a lot more questions, of course. Once I had the photos, it would have been pretty easy to add a question about a double bass and about a viola to the ones about cello and violin. But in the end, I decided against it. I don’t want to swamp the students with questions, and wading around in the subtle differences between this and that instrument would have become boring very quickly.
There was one question I actually made less difficult. In one question, there’s the sound of an alto saxophone. Originally, I had soprano sax, tenor sax and oboe as the wrong answers. But I decided that the difference between a tenor and an alto sax was too small, so I changed it to a clarinet. That way, the question becomes a lot more about the difference between oboes and clarinets on one side, and saxophones on the other.
